The President-General of the Ndokwa Neku Union (NNU), Comrade Amechi Asugwuni, has commended the Vice Chancellor of the newly established Federal University of Health and Medical Sciences, Kwale, for his dedication to the growth and development of the institution.
Speaking while hosting members of the Ndokwa Media Professionals Forum, Asugwuni called on all Ndokwa sons and daughters to see the university as their collective asset and protect it as their own.
He revealed that during a recent visit, the Vice Chancellor conducted him around both the temporary campus and the permanent site, where construction work has reached an advanced stage.
He also praised the efforts being made to ensure a conducive learning and working environment for staff and students.
Asugwuni expressed concern over criticisms directed at the Vice Chancellor, particularly regarding the employment of Ndokwa indigenes, questioning why such actions should attract attacks.
He noted that the VC’s wife, a director at the University of Benin, relocated to Kwale to support the institution’s development despite working under modest conditions.
The NNU leader urged Ndokwa people to rise above primordial sentiments and embrace unity, stressing that the Union is committed to building bridges across political and social divides.
He emphasized that unity would strengthen the Ndokwa’s advocacy efforts and ensure its interests are taken seriously.
Asugwuni also stated that the NNU remains non-partisan and is focused on engaging governments and stakeholders at all levels.
He disclosed ongoing discussions concerning the Okpai Independent Power Plant, describing it as unfair that the facility supplies electricity to multiple states while host communities remain underserved.
He further highlighted concerns over oil production benefits, noting that the existing nine percent oil quantum arrangement is outdated, especially given the significant number of oil wells operated in the area.
He added that the Union is engaging the NDDC on matters affecting Ndokwa as a key stakeholder in oil and gas production.
The NNU President-General commended the Ndokwa Media Professionals Forum for the visit and encouraged continued collaboration to promote a positive image of the Ndokwa nation.
Earlier, the Forum’s Chairman, Comrade Barth Inneh-Ozah, said the visit was aimed at strengthening communication, fostering collaboration, and exploring ways to advance the collective aspirations of Ndokwa people.
The engagement concluded with a cake-cutting ceremony to mark the first anniversary of the Amechi Asugwuni-led NNU executive.
