Former Head of State and Convener of the Nigeria Praise Movement, General Yakubu Gowon, has called on Nigerians to promote religious tolerance and national unity, warning against actions capable of creating divisions among the country's diverse faith communities.
Gowon made the appeal on Sunday during the fifth day of the Global Crusade with Kumuyi (GCK) in Abuja, themed "Wonder-Working Power of Christ," held at the National Stadium, Abuja.
Recalling his recent visit to Benue State, the elder statesman disclosed that the crusade was initially scheduled to hold in the state before it was moved to Abuja due to activities marking Benue State's 50th anniversary.
"I was in Benue yesterday. I was told that the crusade was supposed to take place in Benue but was shifted to Abuja because of the state's 50th anniversary, in which I am involved," Gowon said.
The former Head of State also expressed appreciation to the General Superintendent of Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Pastor W. F. Kumuyi, for his commitment to spiritual revival and prayers for the nation.
"Deeper Life Bible Church has been involved with Nigeria Praise for many years. I have worshipped with you a few times in the past. What a great joy it is to receive this great support from Pastor W. F. Kumuyi," he stated.
Gowon further commended the ministry for its sustained intercessory efforts on behalf of Nigeria.
"May I deeply say thank you to Pastor Kumuyi, the General Superintendent of the great movement called Deeper Christian Life Ministry, worldwide. I want to express my greetings for the good work you are doing for this country, for the prayers being offered for the country, and for the unity of the country," he said.
Emphasising the importance of peaceful coexistence among adherents of different faiths, Gowon noted that Nigeria's diversity should be a source of strength rather than division.
"Remember, this country is made up of various religions. We have Christians, Muslims, and practitioners of traditional religion. Whatever we do, we should make sure that we do not create barriers between ourselves and any other religion in the country.
"Do not allow anyone from outside to use Christianity to create discrimination in the country. The power of God working in us will help us keep our country united and as one. I am asking you to continue in prayer to ensure that this country remains one and united," he added.
Pastor W. F. Kumuyi has been in Abuja preaching, teaching, and ministering to thousands of worshippers during the five-day crusade, which featured biblical teachings, prayers, and messages centred on faith, salvation, healing, and national transformation.
