Former Senator representing Edo Central Senatorial District, Senator Odion Ugbesia, has described Hon. Godwin Ndidi Elumelu as a trusted friend and political associate whose loyalty and commitment went beyond the boundaries of politics and public service.
Ugbesia, reflecting on his relationship with Elumelu, said the two first met during his years as a minister, adding that what began as an ordinary acquaintance gradually developed into a close relationship founded on trust, loyalty and genuine personal affection.
According to him, the strength of their relationship became particularly evident when he decided to pursue the governorship.
Ugbesia said Elumelu did not regard the ambition as merely another political contest but embraced it as a personal cause and committed his time, resources, energy and influence to the effort.
“He took it personally. He embraced my aspiration as though it were his own, and he threw himself into the struggle with a commitment that touched me deeply,” Ugbesia recalled.
He said Elumelu’s contribution was not limited to material support, noting that his unwavering belief in the campaign and continued presence during difficult moments were particularly significant.
Ugbesia described Elumelu’s support as consistent and wholehearted, saying his confidence in the cause remained strong even when the political journey became challenging.
The former senator noted that political relationships could often be tested by ambition and changing circumstances, but said Elumelu’s loyalty stood out during that period.
“He was not merely a supporter of my campaign; he became one of those trusted companions whose presence gave me strength at moments when the burden of the journey was heavy,” he said.
Ugbesia said he remained grateful for Elumelu’s friendship and sacrifices, adding that some people may enter one’s life through politics but become permanently significant because of the humanity they demonstrate along the way.
“Godwin Elumelu is one of such people for me. His friendship, loyalty and sacrifice during that period will always occupy a special place in my memory,” Ugbesia said.
