NCDMB, FAB Development Empower 50 Kaduna Youths with Skills to Transform Nigeria’s Power Sector

The Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), in collaboration with FAB Development Company Nigeria Limited, has successfully concluded a five-day technical training and empowerment programme for 50 youths in Kaduna State, equipping them with practical skills in electricity meter repairs and electrical distribution switchgear.
The programme, which took place from August 10 to 14, 2026, was designed to strengthen indigenous technical capacity, promote Nigerian participation in the power-sector value chain and provide young people with practical skills that can translate into employment, entrepreneurship and sustainable livelihoods.
The initiative focused on two critical areas of the electricity distribution ecosystem: electricity meter repairs and electrical distribution switchgear. Participants were exposed to both theoretical knowledge and hands-on practical sessions aimed at developing their ability to identify faults, carry out repairs and apply appropriate safety procedures in real-world working environments.
During the training, the beneficiaries received instruction in fault diagnosis, repair and calibration of electricity meters, as well as the installation, maintenance and safe handling of electrical distribution switchgear. The curriculum was delivered by certified engineers and experienced industry facilitators, who emphasized technical competence, occupational safety, industry standards and best practices.
Beyond technical training, the programme also placed emphasis on entrepreneurship and economic empowerment, encouraging participants to view the skills acquired as a pathway to self-employment and business development. With growing demand for competent technicians in electricity metering, maintenance and distribution, the beneficiaries are expected to use their new expertise to pursue opportunities within the power sector and related technical services.
FAB Development Company Nigeria Limited, the implementing partner, commended the participants for their commitment, discipline and active participation throughout the training. The company encouraged the beneficiaries to maximize the opportunity by applying their skills professionally, pursuing employment opportunities and exploring business ventures that can create additional jobs within their communities.
The programme culminated in the presentation of starter packs and certificates of completion to all 50 beneficiaries. The starter packs are intended to provide participants with essential tools and equipment to begin putting their newly acquired skills into practice.
The beneficiaries were drawn from communities across Kaduna State, giving the intervention a broad reach and creating a pool of trained technicians capable of supporting electricity-related services at the grassroots level.
Stakeholders described the intervention as particularly timely, given the growing need for qualified personnel in Nigeria's electricity metering and distribution sector. A stronger pool of locally trained technicians can contribute to improved maintenance services, faster fault resolution and more efficient electricity distribution while reducing dependence on external technical expertise.
The collaboration between NCDMB and FAB Development Company Nigeria Limited also reflects the broader importance of skills development, youth empowerment and local content promotion in building a more resilient Nigerian power sector.
By combining technical training with practical tools and entrepreneurship-focused support, the initiative goes beyond classroom instruction to create a pathway for beneficiaries to become economically productive and contribute to their communities.
The successful completion of the programme marks another step toward developing a skilled indigenous workforce capable of supporting Nigeria's power infrastructure, creating employment opportunities and strengthening local participation across the electricity value chain.
