Passengers and crew aboard a flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv helped prevent a potentially catastrophic incident on Wednesday after the co-pilot allegedly attacked the captain in the cockpit, sending the aircraft into a rapid descent before other qualified pilots aboard the plane took control.
The Boeing 737-8 MAX, operating as Flight FZ1073, was carrying passengers from Dubai International Airport to Ben Gurion Airport in Israel when the incident occurred.
According to Israeli officials and passenger accounts, the co-pilot attacked and stabbed the captain during the flight. The aircraft subsequently lost thousands of feet of altitude in a matter of seconds, prompting alarm among passengers and triggering emergency procedures.
Flight-tracking data indicated that the aircraft descended by roughly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds during the most dramatic phase of the incident.
Passengers initially believed the aircraft was experiencing severe turbulence. However, the situation became clear when the cockpit door was opened and a struggle involving the pilots was discovered.
Passengers and cabin crew reportedly entered the cockpit and overpowered the co-pilot. Among those aboard the aircraft were additional flydubai pilots travelling as passengers. The pilots were able to enter the cockpit and take control of the aircraft.
The aircraft then diverted to Tabuk, in northwestern Saudi Arabia, where it made a safe emergency landing at Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Airport.
The captain and co-pilot were injured and taken for medical treatment. Authorities said all passengers were accounted for and survived the incident.
The aircraft had transmitted emergency signals during the incident, including the international transponder code used to indicate unlawful interference. The unusual flight path prompted Israeli authorities to scramble fighter jets as they initially assessed the possibility of a hijacking or other security threat.
The aircraft ultimately did not continue toward Israel and instead diverted to Saudi Arabia.
Israeli officials have described the incident as an apparent attempt by the co-pilot to crash the aircraft. However, that interpretation has not yet been conclusively established by investigators.
Flydubai has confirmed that an altercation took place in the flight deck but has urged caution over speculation concerning the cause or motive.
In a statement, the airline said the aircraft was secured by qualified flydubai crew members who were travelling aboard the flight and that the aircraft was diverted to Tabuk, where it landed safely.
The airline also confirmed that passengers and crew were safe and accounted for.
The motive behind the alleged attack remains unclear. Authorities have not established whether terrorism or another motive was involved, and investigators are expected to examine how the alleged weapon was obtained and how the confrontation developed inside the cockpit.
The incident has also raised questions about cockpit security and the screening of pilots. Israeli authorities have indicated that additional security checks for pilots operating flights into Israel could be introduced following the incident.
After several hours in Tabuk, passengers were provided with assistance while flydubai arranged a replacement aircraft to continue their journey to Israel.
The incident is now under investigation by the relevant aviation and security authorities in Saudi Arabia, Israel and the United Arab Emirates.
For now, the most significant outcome is that a potentially disastrous in-flight emergency ended without loss of life, following the intervention of passengers, cabin crew and qualified pilots who were travelling aboard the aircraft.
