Culture Must Unite Nigerians, Not Fuel Chaos — NYSC Rivers Coordinator

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Rivers State has urged corps members to harness Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage to promote national unity, peace and social harmony rather than division and conflict.
The State Coordinator of the NYSC in Rivers State, Mr. Moses Oleghe, gave the charge during the 2026 Batch B Stream II inter-platoon cultural carnival held at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Nonwa-Gbam, in Tai Local Government Area of the state.
Oleghe described corps members as “elite youths and graduates” with the knowledge and experience needed to drive positive cultural transformation across communities.
He urged them to use their academic training and life experiences to promote cultural practices that respect human dignity and fundamental human rights, while challenging harmful traditions rooted in ignorance.
According to him, corps members should become agents of cultural revival by preserving positive aspects of Nigeria’s diverse traditions while helping to eliminate practices that undermine peace, unity and human dignity.
The Special Guest of Honour, Commander, 6 Division Garrison, Nigerian Army, Bori Camp, Port Harcourt, Brig.-Gen. A. A. Bello, expressed satisfaction with the quality of cultural performances by the corps members.
Bello charged the youths to contribute meaningfully to nation-building, urging them to embrace discipline, patriotism, integrity and hard work.
He reminded the corps members that they constitute Nigeria’s “successor generation” and therefore have a responsibility to ensure that the country works and succeeds.
At the end of the colourful competition, 10 Platoon emerged winners, while 7 Platoon and 4 Platoon came second and third respectively.
The event was sponsored by Peak Milk, which rewarded the winning platoons with cash prizes of ₦100,000, ₦50,000 and ₦25,000 for first, second and third positions respectively.
